Breckenridge Golf Club - Golfing In The Rockies
Did you know at 9000 feet the golf ball travels farther and straighter than in lower elevations because there is less air resistance?
You can find a golf course that sits right at this elevation in Breckenridge, Colorado. Breckenridge also happens to have the only municipal 27-hole golf course designed by golf pro Jack Nicklaus in the world. The Breckenridge Golf Club golf course is composed of The Bear Nine, The Beaver Nine and the Elk Nine.
The Bear Nine opened in 1985 and was the first nine built. The first six holes are difficult, but not as challenging as the last three. With views of the beautiful mountain range, The Bear Nine has a very open feel. The Beaver Nine opened in 1987 boasts beaver ponds and beautiful narrow ranges. Many people say that the beaver pond on the 8th holes seem to attract balls. The Elk Nine opened in 2001 and completed the 27-hole golf course. The golf course has earned several awards including Best Mountain Course and Toughest Mountain Course by Colorado Golfer. The Golf Digest states the course one of their top "Upscale Places To Play" in the United States.
During the summer, the temperature of Breckenridge is never too hot or cold. The usual temperature ranges between 65 and 80 degrees, perfect for golfing.
A unique feature of the course is that it has four sets of tees to accommodate any player's skill level. The golf shop has been awarded one of "America's 100 Best Golf Shops" 8 times by Golf Shop Operations. Golf Terminology - Birdie
One-under-par (-1). These most commonly occur when a player's approach shot lands sufficiently close to the hole that he or she requires only one putt to hole out. The term is believed to have originated during a game at the Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield, NJ in either 1899 or 1903. It seems that one day, three golfers - William Poultney Smith, founding member of Pine Valley, his brother Ab Smith, and George Crump, who was later to build Pine Valley, about 45 miles away - were playing together when Crump hit his second shot only inches from the cup on a par-four hole after his first shot had struck a bird in flight. Simultaneously, the Smith brothers exclaimed that Crump's shot was "a bird." Crump's short putt left him one under par for the hole, and from that day the three of them referred to such a score as a "birdie." In short order, the entire membership of the club began using the term and, since as a resort the club had a lot of out-of-town visitors, the expression spread and caught the fancy of all American golfers. The Perfect Round (score of 54 on a par 72 course) is most commonly described as scoring a birdie on all 18 holes.

Fairway Divots
Divots are part of the game, and should always be repaired to keep the game enjoyable for all those playing the course. A golfer should replace the loose grass and gently step on it to set it in place. Some courses may have buckets of sand or seed used for repairing divots. A suggestion is that golfers should carry divot tools to help fit the new sand in. Regardless, golfers should fix any damage inflicted on the course.
